Ukiah protesters say ‘No Kings’ on Trump’s big day

More than 1,000 protesters crowded the streets surrounding Mendocino County’s courthouse in Ukiah on June 14. This was one of nearly 2,000 protests planned nationwide through NoKings.org to protest Donald Trump’s administration. The protests happened the same day that Trump held a military parade for the 250th anniversary of the Army, which was also the same day as Trump’s 79th birthday.

The Ukiah protest began at 10 a.m. with organizers and supporters arriving early to set up a microphone and information table. Janet Rosen, an organizer with Indivisible Ukiah, who coordinated Ukiah’s protest, said the theme of the protest was the Declaration of Independence, in light of two anniversaries.

“Today was the day that the constitutional army was created and we’re just a couple of months away from the formal signing of the Declaration of Independence, which, if you read it, is essentially a long list of grievances against King George III,” Rosen said. “And, in reading it, we realized that there’s an awful lot of similarities in those grievances to what we’re experiencing now”

Speakers and actors read excerpts of the Declaration off of scrolls on the steps of the courthouse, as well as on the streets, creating what Rosen called street theatre. The Declaration, in part, reads as follows.

“He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands,” the Declaration reads. “He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers … He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.”

Rosen said that mobilization is a powerful way to send a message to the administration.

“As we have seen in all tyrannies, the only way that people’s rights can be restored or protected is by standing up publicly and loudly and peacefully. But our elected leaders sometimes are afraid to take a stand,” Rosen said. “Fortunately, we’re seeing some bravery from our elected leaders in Congress, but they need to know that the public is pushing them to stand strong in that it’s a situation where it’s 100% the grassroots, speaking up, standing up, being courageous, with peaceful intention and with compassion for their communities that has always proven, in the long run to be the best resistance to tyranny.”

Indivisible Ukiah, originally founded in 2017, has reactivated after a four-year hiatus, according to Rosen, and is putting in effort to protect local organizations and institutions that may be threatened under the new administration.

“While we are most well known for large, noisy events like this, we have working groups who are quietly working on community organizing, old-fashioned grassroots organizing, to stand with the local nonprofits and other civic institutions that form our community life, and that might be under future attack,” Rosen said.

One of the protesters, Esmeralda Gomez, wore her graduation cap and gown from UC Santa Cruz, as well as a CAMP stole made to look like a Mexican rebozo, which represented the support she received from Mendocino College’s federally funded program that supports first year students who come from migrant or seasonal work backgrounds.

“I decided to wear this because I’m really proud,” Gomez said. “When I started college, I was working at the fields, and [CAMP] helped me to get a lot of support and help.”

Gomez came to the United States alone at 21 years old with $80 dollars and a dream of going to Mendocino College after hearing about it from a family friend.

“I don’t agree that they’re calling us criminals for being Hispanic,” Gomez said. “It’s really disappointing that my parents are being called criminals for wanting this education for me. we’re not criminals, we’re also professionals. We’re daughters, we’re moms, we’re an entire community.”

Gomez left México because her community faced severe violence, including femicide, which is still happening in her hometown of León, Guanajuato. Now, she faces concerns for her wellbeing while sweeps of mass deportations happen in the U.S. under Trump’s administration, following his campaign promises.

“One time I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna go back to México, because I do miss my family.’ But then when I arrived to the city, there was a protest like this, but it was because they are killing the females in my city, just because they’re females,” Gomez said. “So is it safe to go there? No. But then I’m scared of being here too, because I know it’s not about legal status, it’s about how I look and the color of my skin.”

When Gomez first came to the U.S., she worked in the vineyards in Lakeport, picking grapes to support herself and her family back home. Less than 10 years later, Gomez received her masters with high honors from Pepperdine University. Now, Gomez is an associate therapist working with Spanish and English-speaking children and adults in Ukiah.

“Now I’m a therapist, and I just feel like it’s not fair that while I’m trying to help people with mental health, all that’s going on in the country is destroying mine, and I know it’s not just mine, but my community’s mental health. It’s really tough to show up to session when you feel so upset about everything that’s going on, when you are afraid for yourself because I don’t think this is about legal status,” Gomez said. “This is about hate towards a community because I think the color of my skin doesn’t define my legal status in the country.”

Gomez said she showed up to the protest for those she already helps because of the fear caused by mass deportations and detainments that have happened across the country.

“I’m here because I don’t agree with everything that’s going on,” Gomez said. “It’s not just for myself, it’s for the community. I’m a therapist, so definitely, this is for my kids. I know what they’re going through, and just seeing how afraid they are for their parents, for themselves.”

At Ukiah’s No Kings protest, Sharon Paltin wore a costume modeled to look like an army tank, armed with ‘ammunition’ which were statistics about the Trump administration printed on paper, tucked into her character’s general’s coat that held a nametape that read, ‘General Confusion.’

“I’m looking at the news and thinking, ‘look at all those tanks. They’re tearing up the streets. I want a tank,’” Paltin said. “And so I made myself one and got in it. And of course, I’m going to be nonviolent. So that’s kind of a nice paradox”

Paltin shot bubbles with a green plastic bubble gun while standing on the corner of State and Perkins Streets.

“I am enjoying participating in street theater, which is a form of nonviolent protest and shows whatever creativity I can bring to it, but I think it’s a way of breaking through, visually and ideologically, to people that might not be paying attention or that need to think about the issue,” Paltin said. “You can use humor and creativity to do that.”

Paltin noted that the U.S. Constitution provides important rights that must not be challenged by the President.

“The Constitution has served us pretty well so far. So things like the First Amendment, well, we got to hold on to that. Trump says he’s going to come down with force against protests. Well, that’s not okay. That’s the First Amendment. And then there are the other amendments that he’s already violated, the citizenship, one that he wants to do away with the habeas corpus, the not taking bribes. It’s like he’s just stomping all over it, and that’s not okay,” Paltin said. “We’re not gonna just let that happen … We’re not going backwards.”

  1. Indivisible Willits was 550+ today as well. We marched down Main St to City Park. It was peaceful, non-violent and joyous. We are NOT going back! We do NOT have Kings in the USA.

    • Gavin Newsom is King of California. (It’s a fact in our one party state that has been crumbling for decades)
      The irony is hilarious.
With that said, if people want real change look into third party candidates. R and D’s don’t give two shits about America or it’s citizens. R and D’s is a form of population control. Tribalism and division.

    • And all the while King Obama who possibly may have just finished serving out his third term from behind the scenes deported more than three million people from 2009 t0 2017 with the overwhelming majority (75% to 83%) not recieving any due process and a chance to plead their case in a court of law.
Just more predictable and expected blatant HYPOCRISY from the progressive far left.

      • Baloney. I’m a middle of the road Independent. My friends and relatives are Catholics, Republicans, conservatives, Democrats, Libertarians. My brother is a decorated Marine vet from Nam who was shot up and damn close to dead. I went to the rally in Fort Bragg with my neighbor, also a Vietnam era vet. We took oaths to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. We want to protect and defend the free country we grew up in. We don’t want to be governed by a bunch of gutless wonders in Congress who are too afraid of Trump to stand up and be counted. We want to trust the government to follow the law and respect our rights. That includes the right to a hearing by a judge before we are imprisoned or sent to the gulag.
This isn’t about some “progressive far left” bogeyman. It is about patriotism. Duty, Honor, Country.

  2. COME HERE LEGALLY!!!!!!
    EVERYONE IS WELCOMED… LEGALLY!!!
NO COUNTRY IN THIS WORLD ACCEPTS MIGRANTS ILLEGALLY!!! NONE!!
    YOU ARE WELCOME… LEGALLY!!!

    • Good luck telling the local grape growing community that. Illegal Mexicans are the cornerstone of our infrastructure. California is rich because if it. If you don’t want illegal immigrants doing mass agriculture then demand that farmers start paying a living wage to their workers. Maybe even hire the local youth?

  3. Back 1979 Jimmy Carter (Democrat) started with China. Since then, all parties borrowing m9ney, large sums, to support our countries expenses. Both parties took from some programs…to go into others. Clinton took SSI to balance budget. Obama in power, allowed Citzens United, to go forward. Why corporations own candidates. People are really protesting because of MONEY, not causes. They want unlimited borrowing from China. Low taxes and lots of free for illegals. All the energy could go into helping fellow citizens but instead. Protest junk is used from China. They want to be taken care of on Chinas dime. But now, also want to borrow, for a person coming accross a border. I believe they should help Illegals become citizens themselves. Stop waiting on the Government. And we need to just take care of our own first, with money borrowed from China. It’s actually what they are angry about. It’s both parties fault pretending, and delusion, we all have deep pockets. If great politicians, are getting killed just trying to balance a out of control budget, because of illegal free benefits?? Who will be next? These people are only trying to save our country from bankruptcy. Honor our politicians on both sides that are actually trying to save us and our benefits. Wake up America. Stop the violence and own up to reality.

    • Citizens United was determined by the Supreme Court not the presidency. The conservative justices made that decision not Obama

Bunch of half truths and overt nonsense.

  4. My takeaways here:

Clearly paid protesting, arrive at 10 leave at 5 on the dot.

Same groups of people at every event: old boomers and young communists and children too young to even vote

Same optics and signage at all events: “burger king”, upside down flags, foreign flags

Exact same speeches WORD FOR WORD between the events

    I found a Craigslist ad in Seattle offering $500-1000 to protest ( https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/evg/d/seattle-demonstrators-needed/7857712648.html )

Same chants from everyone at each event

I wonder who’s funding all this (I know who)

  5. It’s almost unbelievable that we have such a stupid arse for a president. Happy birthday to the bronzed wingnut with his $40 million vanity parade.

He really has no shame. We can do so much better. Biden should have started acting smart about two years ago. What a mess. We are all to blame. Don’t let it happen again.

  8. The Constitution protects US citizens. Not illegals. Illegal pertains to anyone not here legally. Playing victim by saying Hispanics are criminals is wrong. Anyone from any country who is here illegally is not a citizen.

Why a 4 yr hiatus? Sleepy joe was incompetent and harris was a slithering idiot. Yes. We are now unburdened by what has been. Trump 47. LOL

    • The Trumpettes are simply too stupid to think that way. Look at the comments here. Insane ramblings, unintelligible run on paragraphs, conspiracy theories…These people look at the sky and ask “what color is that? If only Trump would tell me…” They have no ability to think for themselves.

  10. No current resident has the gall to file the following necessary complaint with the ICC:

Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump should be investigated for aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the State of Israel during his term (2017–2021), particularly in Gaza and the West Bank. His administration knowingly supplied weapons, funding, and political cover to a government conducting religiously motivated warfare that resulted in mass civilian deaths, destruction of homes, and systemic persecution of a largely Muslim population. Trump’s policies—including recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, cutting all aid to Palestinian institutions, and encouraging religious settler expansion—violated the constitutional right of the American People to remain free from religious coercion and foreign religious warfare. His actions, taken with knowledge of foreseeable atrocities and without legal or moral restraint, constitute complicity in religious violence and demand investigation under Articles 7 and 8 of the Rome Statute.

  11. Everyone is so virtuous & unwavering in their ideology. No room for discussion. Just vitriol & name calling. So brainwashed by your social media algorithms & group thought mind viruses. Does anyone think for themselves anymore? Y’all can keep it. It’s exhausting & insufferable from both sides of the isle.

  12. Rockland County, New York with a population of 340,807 had zero ( 0 )votes for Kamala Harris in the last election! If you think there is something fishy going on, you’re right. After seeing the millions and millions of patriotic Americans who showed up to protest this corrupt regime, I have to ask myself ….. did Trump rig the election? And how can we make sure the BIG BLUE WAVE happens in the mid-terms?

    1
    8
    • L0L that”s absurd!
The foolish Democrats are the champions of rigging elections and they lost for two reasons.
The utter incompetence of Joe Biden and the fact that they ushered in a terrible DEI candidate who brought absolutely nothing to the table and never will.
If your party would have had the sense to follow protocal and go through the primary process Josh Shapiro would have been the candidate and would have probably won handily and we would not be having this argument.

  13. Not fair and balanced reporting, both sides of the issue should be presented.
Why on earth do you all keep protecting the ilegal criminals that have crossed our border from every country on this planet? Where was your liberal outrage when Obama deported 3 million ilegals??? TDS syndrome, its time to stop hating your neighbors and fellow citizens and use common sence on the issues.

  14. Seems the Trumpanzees are getting riled up as day after day their boy demonstrates his ignorance and incompetence.

Don’t worry, we know you as our friends and neighbors. This will work itself out. Take it easy.

  15. This is the beauty of the country we live in. Its the ability to speak your mind and feel however you want. I’m glad it turned out to be a peaceful protest. It makes me wonder if permits were secured for the gathering and the parade. In any case, the event was treated like it should have been, with citizens freely speaking their mind in a public setting without fear of getting head bashed in. Notice how the majority of Americans who freely voted Trump into office didn’t get in the way of the minorities free right to disapprove. Its worth pointing out that no real king would allow for protests or elections, so the “king” moniker might be reaching a bit too much. It’s a great rallying cry for folks who already dislike Trump. For the rest of us, it’s ridiculous and overstated. If we want to create unity and indivisibility, let’s start with being less divisive.
